Reflections from My Mom’s Journals, post #2
“There is no dollar sign on peace of mind.” -Elin Hilderbrand
"The punishment of every disordered mind is its own disorder." -St. Augustine
"Happiness is a choice. Peace is a state of mind. Both are free.” -Amy Leigh Mercree
"We never get what we want — we get what we are. -Doran Cooks
They’re all great quotes! I especially like number three:
"Happiness is a choice. Peace is a state of mind. Both are free."
So often, I find myself thinking, "I would be happy if only XYZ would happen," or "If I could just acquire XYZ, I could be happy. Both of those thoughts are shallow and a sign of someone living in the ego state of mind.
In truth, I can decide — the moment my feet hit the floor in the morning —
that I will be happy. I will not let circumstances or other people’s drama affect my
choice to be happy. Getting it is the easy part — now comes the implementation!
Number two had me thinking for a while as I tried to fully grasp its meaning.
Here are a few thoughts:
The quote — "The punishment of every disordered mind is its own disorder." — is attributed to St. Augustine, a philosopher and theologian.
It essentially means that a chaotic or troubled mind creates its own suffering.
The disorder is the punishment. Rather than needing external consequences,
the internal state of turmoil, confusion, or lack of harmony is itself a form of suffering.
A person with a disordered mind (conflicted, anxious, immoral, or misaligned)
experiences pain not because something external punishes them, but because their
own state of mind is already a kind of torment. My friend Melissa is an LPC and LMFT,
and I can almost hear her in the background saying, “Hungry Ghost!"
The “hungry ghost” refers to someone with excessive greed, attachment to the past,
self-absorption, and the inability to achieve true contentment. It’s a powerful metaphor
for the insatiable desires and lack of fulfillment that can affect all of us at times.
So there are some deep thoughts for the day. I hope they cause you to pause, reflect,
and feel grateful to be living your life.
Until next time... keep loving & living your best life!
Wishing you Love, Light & Sparkles!
